The short answer: agent search optimization is making your business easy for a personal AI agent to find, read, trust and book. In 2026 those agents went from demos to products: Meta's Muse, Google's Gemini Spark, OpenAI's Dots, xAI's Grok Bot, Amazon's Alexa+ and Perplexity's Comet all search, compare and act on someone's behalf. Compass AI Group, an operations and growth consultancy in Toronto, helps Canadian owner-operators get ready for them. Most of the work is not new or exotic: accurate facts, a current Google Business Profile, booking on the platforms agents already use, and a site the agents' crawlers are allowed to read.
This guide covers who the agents are, what is live in Canada today, how they choose a business, which bots will show up in your server logs, and what to do this quarter.
What changed: search became something an agent does for you
For twenty years, search meant a person typing words and reading a list of links. Then AI answers arrived on top of the list. Now a third thing is happening: the person hands the job to an agent, and the agent does the searching, comparing and booking.
The shift in plain numbers:
- 44% of U.S. adults have used ChatGPT, up from 18% in 2023, and 42% use AI chatbots to look things up (Pew Research Center, February 2026). Among adults under 50 it is more than half.
- When Google shows an AI summary, people click a regular result 8% of the time instead of 15% (Pew Research Center, March 2025 browsing data from 900 adults). They clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.
- Google's AI Overviews reach more than 2 billion people a month, and AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in July 2026 (Alphabet earnings remarks).
- Visits to U.S. retail sites referred by AI assistants rose 693% over the 2025 holidays, year over year (Adobe Analytics).
- In Canada the curve is earlier but rising: 8% of Canadians used an AI chatbot for news in the past week in 2026, up from 6%, and 14% of adults under 35 (Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026, Canada, Université Laval). And 30% of Canadian workers used generative AI at work by July 2025, up from 17% ten months earlier (Statistics Canada).
None of this means Google is going away. Google still sends most of the web's referral traffic. It means a growing share of the first impression a buyer gets of your business is written by a machine, and a growing share of the clicking is done by one.
The personal agents, by name
These are the agents a Canadian small business should know about, with what each can do for its user and whether it is live in Canada. Dates and status were checked against each company's own announcements on 8 October 2026; where only press coverage was available, it says so.
| Agent | Maker | What it can do for its user | Status, and Canada |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muse | Meta | A personal agent with its own browser on a secure virtual machine. Sends email, books travel, fills forms and checks out with Stripe's Link. Asks before it sends or spends. | Launched 8 Sept 2026. Canada: consumer launch was U.S. first |
| Muse for Small Business | Meta | Connects to Shopify, Stripe, QuickBooks, Klaviyo, Canva, Slack, Notion and your Facebook and Instagram business accounts, plus custom connectors. "Nothing publishes, sends, or spends without your approval." | Launched 29 Sept 2026. Canada: yes, U.S. and Canada |
| Gemini Spark | An always-on agent in Gmail, Docs and the rest of Workspace. Connected apps include OpenTable, Instacart, Canva, Dropbox and Zillow, and it accepts custom connections through MCP. | Beta from May 2026, expanded in July 2026. Canada: yes, for Google AI Ultra subscribers | |
| AI Mode restaurant booking | Checks live availability across booking platforms and restaurant websites, then hands off to OpenTable, Libro and others to book. | Live since 10 April 2026. Canada: yes | |
| Dots | OpenAI | Always-on agents inside ChatGPT, each with its own cloud computer, working toward goals across thousands of apps and reporting back in ChatGPT, Slack or Teams. | Announced 29 Sept 2026, rolling out to paid plans. Canada: not stated by OpenAI |
| Grok Bot | xAI | Agents on persistent cloud computers that run scheduled tasks for the user. | Beta since 11 Aug 2026, in SuperGrok plans. Canada: not stated by xAI |
| Alexa+ | Amazon | Books tables through OpenTable and plans trips with Tripadvisor, in English and French. | Live. Canada: yes, for everyone, free with Prime |
| Comet | Perplexity | A browser with an assistant that browses, books and buys. | Free worldwide since Oct 2025. Canada: yes |
| Claude in Chrome | Anthropic | Reads pages, clicks through sites and fills forms in the user's own browser. | Generally available since 26 Aug 2026. Canada: not stated by Anthropic |
| Siri AI | Apple | Personal context and actions inside apps, built on Apple's App Intents. | Shipped 14 Sept 2026, in beta. Canada: not stated by Apple |
Two names cause confusion. "Spark" is Google's personal agent, Gemini Spark. Meta also uses the word: Muse Spark is the AI model that powers the Muse agent, not a separate agent. And "Muse" is easy to confuse with older Meta AI features; Muse is the new agent, launched in September 2026.
A few things that were talked about a lot in 2025 are no longer the products to plan around. OpenAI folded Operator into ChatGPT agent, then moved on to Dots; ChatGPT's Instant Checkout was scaled back in March 2026 so merchants keep their own checkout. Several of the buying features (Google's agentic checkout, Microsoft's Copilot Checkout, Perplexity's Instant Buy, Amazon's Buy for Me) are U.S.-only for now.
How an agent chooses a business
An agent is a careful, impatient reader. It reads what it can reach quickly, prefers facts that agree across sources, and moves on when something is hidden or contradictory. Here is what the makers themselves say they read.
OpenAI says products in ChatGPT are "selected independently", are not ads, and that merchants are ranked on availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller. Shopify stores are included through Shopify Catalog; other merchants can apply for a direct product feed.
Google says there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode: no special AI files and no special schema.org markup. What it does ask is that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is current. Its restaurant booking reads booking platforms and restaurant websites.
Meta's Muse works through connectors (Shopify, Stripe, QuickBooks and others) and its own browser, and supports custom connectors for services Meta does not cover yet.
That points to a short list of what actually decides whether an agent picks you:
- Facts it can read. Hours, services, service area, price ranges and how to book, in the text of your pages, not inside an image or a video.
- Facts that agree. The same name, address, phone and hours on your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories in your industry.
- A way to act. Online booking on a platform agents already query (OpenTable, Libro, Jane, your booking system's public page), or a product feed if you sell goods.
- Permission to read. Your robots.txt lets the AI search crawlers in, even if you choose to block the ones that collect training data.
- Reasons to trust you. Reviews, and independent sites that describe you the same way you describe yourself.
- For some agents, a direct connection. Gemini Spark and Muse accept custom connectors, many through MCP (Model Context Protocol). For most small businesses this is a next-year item, not a this-quarter one.
The bots that will show up in your server logs
Each company sends its own crawlers, and they do different jobs. Some collect training data, some build a search index, and some fetch a page only because a person (or their agent) asked. These are the documented names, from each company's own crawler documentation.
| Bot name | Company | What it does | Follows robots.txt? |
|---|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | OpenAI | Builds ChatGPT's search index | Yes |
| ChatGPT-User | OpenAI | Fetches a page when a user asks | OpenAI says rules may not apply |
| GPTBot | OpenAI | Collects training data | Yes |
| Claude-SearchBot | Anthropic | Builds Claude's search index | Yes |
| Claude-User | Anthropic | Fetches a page when a user asks | Yes |
| ClaudeBot | Anthropic | Collects training data | Yes |
| PerplexityBot | Perplexity | Builds Perplexity's index | Yes |
| Perplexity-User | Perplexity | Fetches a page when a user asks | Perplexity says it generally ignores it |
| Googlebot | Search index, which also feeds AI Overviews and AI Mode | Yes | |
| Google-Agent | Acts on a page at a user's request | No, it is user-triggered | |
| Google-Extended | A robots.txt switch for Gemini training; never seen in logs | Yes | |
| meta-webindexer | Meta | Builds Meta AI's search index | Yes |
| meta-externalagent | Meta | Training and Meta products | Yes |
| meta-externalfetcher | Meta | Fetches a page when a user asks | May bypass it |
| Applebot | Apple | Search index for Siri and Spotlight | Yes |
| Amzn-SearchBot | Amazon | Alexa's search index | Yes |
| bingbot | Microsoft | Bing's index, which Copilot answers from | Yes |
| DuckAssistBot | DuckDuckGo | Live fetch for AI answers | Yes |
Two notes. First, xAI has not published official documentation for a Grok crawler. You may see names like xAI-SearchBot in third-party bot lists, but treat any "GrokBot" string as unconfirmed until xAI documents it. Second, the newest agents often do not announce themselves with a name at all: OpenAI's agent signs its requests cryptographically instead, a standard called Web Bot Auth that Cloudflare and Google are also adopting. If your site sits behind an aggressive firewall or bot blocker, check that it does not turn away signed agents along with the scrapers.
What to do this quarter
In order, the cheapest first:
- Run a free check. The AI search check tests whether the AI search crawlers are allowed in, whether your page text is readable without scripts, whether your business details match, and whether a buyer can book without a CAPTCHA. It takes about 20 seconds and needs no email.
- Fix your Google Business Profile. Hours, services, booking link, photos with real descriptions. It is the single source most agents lean on.
- Put the facts in the text. Hours, service area, the questions people phone to ask, and the answer to each in the first sentence. Agents, like people in a hurry, read the top of the page.
- Make booking possible without a phone call. If your industry has a booking platform that agents query, be on it. If you take bookings through your own site, make sure the form works without JavaScript tricks or a CAPTCHA wall.
- Decide your robots.txt on purpose. Allow the search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, bingbot, Applebot, meta-webindexer). Blocking the training crawlers is a business choice, not a requirement.
- Keep a product feed current if you sell goods: Shopify covers ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog; Google uses Merchant Center.
- Answer the phone when an agent gets you a lead. An agent can send a buyer to your door at 9 p.m. If that call goes to voicemail, the work above was for a competitor. This is where an AI receptionist earns its keep.
What not to buy
- "Guaranteed placement" in ChatGPT or an agent. There is no paid placement in organic AI answers. OpenAI says its product results are not ads. Anyone promising a guaranteed citation is selling something they cannot deliver.
- A special "AI schema" package. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features. Good structured data that matches your visible page helps every machine read you; a bolt-on "AI file" is not a ranking factor.
- An agent strategy before the basics. If your hours are wrong on Google, no connector will fix that. Sometimes the answer is a better process, not AI at all.
How Compass AI Group helps
Compass AI Group finds where a business leaks time or money, then builds the fix inside the business: fixed scope, fixed price, fixed timeline, in writing. For search and agents that means the audit (what the AI assistants and agents can see about you today), the fixes (facts, profiles, booking paths, crawler access, structured data), and a monthly written report of clicks, calls and AI citations. About one in six Bearings Reports says: do nothing yet. If that is your answer, you will hear it from us.

Questions
What is agent search optimization?
Agent search optimization is making your business easy for a personal AI agent to find, read, trust and book. Agents such as Meta's Muse, Google's Gemini Spark and OpenAI's Dots search and act for their users, so the business with clear facts, consistent listings and a way to book without a phone call is the one they choose.
How is it different from SEO and GEO?
SEO earns a place in Google's list of links. GEO (generative engine optimization) earns a mention inside an AI answer. Agent search optimization goes one step further: an agent reads your facts and then acts, booking or buying for the user. The foundation is shared, so the same work on clear pages and consistent facts serves all three.
Which personal AI agents are available in Canada?
As of October 2026: Meta's Muse for Small Business (U.S. and Canada), Google's Gemini Spark for AI Ultra subscribers, Google AI Mode's restaurant booking, Amazon's Alexa+ and Perplexity's Comet browser. OpenAI's Dots, xAI's Grok Bot and Anthropic's Claude in Chrome have not published a Canada-specific status.
Do I need special code or an llms.txt file for AI agents?
No. Google says there are no special requirements or markup for its AI features. What matters is readable text, accurate business details, current profiles and feeds, and letting the AI search crawlers in. An llms.txt file is optional and cheap to add, but no major engine has confirmed it reads one.
Should I block AI bots in robots.txt?
Allow the search crawlers, such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot, or the assistants cannot cite you. Blocking training crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended is a separate business choice and does not remove you from AI search results.
