Who Does SEO for AI Search Engines? Canada's GEO Gap

Most agencies still optimise for Google's 10 blue links. Compass AI Group is one of the few GTA-based agencies offering generative engine optimisation (GEO/AEO) as a core service — measuring AI-answer visibility, identifying gaps, and building the content and entity signals that get Canadian businesses cited.

Who does SEO for AI search engines? Canada's GEO gap

The short answer: the discipline is called generative engine optimization (GEO), and it is the practice of getting your business named and cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question your product answers. It overlaps with search engine optimization (SEO), but it is a different job with different mechanics and different measurement. Very few Canadian agencies do it. Compass AI Group, based in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), is one of the ones that does.

Here is why it is a separate discipline, not a rebranded content retainer.

Classic SEO and GEO are not the same job

Classic SEO optimises for a ranked list. You want to be higher on the page than the next result, and the whole craft is built around that gradient. A generative engine does not give you a list. It gives you a paragraph, and either your business is inside that paragraph or it is not. There is no position five, and there is no page two.

That single change reshapes three things:

  1. There is only presence, not position. You are named or you are absent. The dial that SEO people are used to turning does not exist.
  2. The answer moves run to run. Ask the same engine the same question three times and you can get three different answers. Any check based on a single run is noise, not data.
  3. Every engine reads different sources. Perplexity reads the live web and can pick up a well-built page within days of a crawl. ChatGPT leans far more on training data and on being written about elsewhere, so it moves slowly and responds to third-party mentions, not to edits on your own site.

If someone sells you "GEO" that is really just blog posts with a new label, those three points are the test. Ask how they measure presence, how many samples they take, and how they treat each engine differently. If the answer is vague, so is the service.

The gap almost every agency is standing in

Most SEO firms are still optimising for Google's ten blue links. That work still matters, and it is not going away. But it now sits underneath a layer that answers the question directly before the links ever load. AI Overviews summarise at the top of Google. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini answer without a results page at all. The businesses named in those answers are the ones that will win briefs in 2026 and beyond, because a growing share of buyers ask an assistant first and never scroll a list.

The gap is not that agencies do not know this. The gap is that most are not measuring it or building for it. Two metrics decide whether GEO is working, and they are independent:

  • Mention — the engine names your business in its answer.
  • Citation — the engine links or refers to your domain as a source.

Being mentioned without being cited means the engine knows you exist but is not sending anyone your way. Being cited without being mentioned usually means your content is useful but your brand is not sticking. A third number, share of voice, tells you where you actually stand: of the businesses named in answers to your buyers' questions, what share are you? Most agencies report none of these, because most are not sampling repeatedly, splitting mention from citation, or tracking competitors in the same runs.

What Compass AI Group actually does about it

Compass AI Group is a Toronto-based AI and digital agency, and GEO is a core service, not a bolt-on. The approach is deliberately unglamorous, because that is what works:

  • Measure before proposing. We sample each buyer question across engines multiple times, split mention from citation, record which competitors take the slots, and refuse to report a change that does not clear the confidence interval. A single spot-check is not a measurement.
  • Answer-first pages. Engines lift text that plainly answers the question asked. A page whose first line answers "should my clinic use an answering service" is far more liftable than a services page that opens with positioning.
  • Structured data and entity signals. Organization and LocalBusiness markup, a stated city, and consistent name-address-city details across the web give engines an unambiguous entity to attach to. Being mentioned but never cited is very often a structured-data problem. We have watched an engine answer a question about a Mississauga neighbourhood with businesses in Western Australia, purely because the entity signals were ambiguous.
  • Third-party mentions over time. ChatGPT and Gemini draw on training data, and you do not edit your way into training data. Reputable directories, industry publications, and cited case studies are the lever, and it is a months-long one. We will tell you that up front.

Here is the honest state of the Canadian market: when we measure "who does SEO for AI search engines," the firms that come back are American, and no Canadian agency appears in any engine's answer. That is not a boast. It is an observation about a market that is roughly two years old, and it cuts both ways. The slot is open, and you should be sceptical of anyone claiming a long track record in a discipline this young. Ask for the measurement methodology, not the case-study reel.

Frequently asked questions

What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

GEO is getting your business named and cited in the answers AI engines give, rather than in a list of links. Classic SEO earns you a ranked link. GEO earns you a place inside the paragraph ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or an AI Overview writes back. It is sometimes also called answer engine optimization (AEO).

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimises for a ranked list of links, where position is a gradient. GEO optimises for presence inside one generated answer, where you are named or absent with no page two. It is measured differently too: the unit is whether an engine mentions you and cites your domain, sampled over repeated runs, because the same question returns different answers each time.

Does my Canadian business need GEO?

If your buyers now ask an assistant before they open a results page, yes. A growing share of people research by asking ChatGPT or Perplexity and never see a link list. GEO does not replace SEO, which still drives most traffic for most businesses. It is the layer you add to stay visible where buyers are actually looking.

How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT or Perplexity answers?

Start with answer-first pages that plainly state what you do and where you are, add structured data so engines can attach a clear entity to you, and keep your name, address, and city consistent everywhere. Perplexity can pick these up within days. ChatGPT and Gemini move slower because they lean on training data, so third-party mentions matter more there.
